CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Valley City officials have blocked off 4th avenue southwest near the Valley City State University after dirt and gravel on the shoulder of the road washed down the hill following torrential rain early Thursday.

Public Works Director Jeff Differding says city crews have cleaned up the intersection of Viking Drive and 4th avenue southwest. He says the road should be open to motorists today at the end of the work day. Differding says crews will have to fill in the washed out shoulder of the road before reopening the road.

Differding says a portion of Winter Show Road from 4th avenue southwest filled back to the AmericaInn filled with waist deep water for a couple of hours. He says a portion of 5th avenue northeast near 6th street northeast flooded and was closed for a short period of time before water receded.

A city official told newsdakota.com that a police vehicle filled with water after the officer opened the door while attempting to close the road to motorists due to the high water level in the street.
