CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) A Healthy Concession Food Expo was held at the Hi-Liner Activity Center recently sponsored by the Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership.

All Valley City Public School booster clubs and groups, along with area schools, and local clubs were invited to attend.

Licensed registered dietitian Andrea Winter says  with busy family schedules adults and students often find themselves needing to eat lunch or supper at the sporting event or other activity.  So why not make it healthy? Winter helped organize the event on behalf of the ON THE MOVE Partnership.

The focus was on tasting healthy choices that booster clubs and groups can sell at concessions and fund raising events.  An array of fast, healthy and easy to prepare foods were served for attendees to sample.  They entrees included shredded pork on a whole grain bun, baked potato with chili or broccoli and cheese, sub sandwiches made with whole grain buns, and different soups.

To round out the concept of a healthy meal, fruit and veggies choices were served:  fruit-yogurt parfait, applesauce pouches, and a veggie boat.

Sharon Buhr, dietitian and ON THE MOVE  chair set the stage for the evening with a few dramatic health facts.  She pointed out that 66% of adults (and 30% of students) are overweight or obese which increases their risk of developing high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.  “But it doesn’t have to be that way,” she emphasized, “we can cut our health risks when we eat healthy”.

Barnes County Extension Agent Susan Milender says although traditional money makers have been sweets and junk food, people today are looking for concessions to provide them with a meal.  “So let’s offer them some healthy meal choices,” added Milender. She explained to the attendees how to make the healthy choice the easy choice and shared how groups can still make money with healthy choices.

Hi-Liner Boosters have already started serving the pulled pork, applesauce pouches, the fruit-yogurt parfaits, and more!  One customer told Karen Murray, one of the Boosters,  that it is “very refreshing to have healthy choices at a concession stand and that the VCHS selection was the best she had seen.

If  organizations (clubs/groups, booster clubs) were unable to attend the Concession Food Expo and would like healthy choices that will still raise funds for the group,  call Andrea Winter at 845-6456.
