CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) For the second week in a row, the Valley City Hi-Liners basketball teams split a pair of home games. This time the boys teams defeated Grand Forks Central 63-38 while the girls came up just short in overtime 79-76.?

Boys: Valley City 63 v. Grand Forks Central 38

After giving up a 5-0 lead at the start of the game, the Hi-Liners turned the game over to Jared Lentz and never looked back.

The Valley City senior forward posted 33 points in the game and pulled down 9 rebounds coming up just shy of a double-double. Ian Schweitzer was right behind his teammate with 11 points in the victory.

Lentz nearly outscored the entire Knights team who posted just five more points than the Hi-Liners stand out. Leading the way on the stat sheet for Grand Forks Central was Jordan Olien and Adam Grove who both boasted 11 pints in the loss.

The victory is the first in the Eastern Dakota Conference for the Hi-Liners in nearly two years. Valley City is now 1-2 in EDC play.

Girls: Valley City 76 Grand Forks Central 79  OT

The Hi-Liner girls held the lead nearly the entire game. It wasn’t until 1:46 left to play that the Knights took over the lead on a a basket by Liz Dub who posted 18 points off of the bench for the visiting team.

After the Knights took a five point lead with just under a minute to play, Valley’s Brenna Dieterle  brought the Hi-Liners within one when she hit a three pointer from the left heal then followed it up with a free throw after being fouled.

Despite the effort, Liz Dub would once again put the Hi-Liners in a three point hole when she drove down the court for another Knights basket. After a timeout, Valley worked past the full court press getting Tarryn Justesen the ball on the left shoulder. As time expired, Her shot fell sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Knights used free throws to gain the three point edge on the Valley City. As a team Grand Forks hit 21 of 29 shots from the charity stripe in the game. Valley City had just 15 opportunity’s and only cashed in on six of them.

Dieterle led the way for the Hi-Liners with a team high 26 points. Clair Olson posted 13 while Bekah Peterson had 11 in the loss.

Central’s Angelica Medrano posted a game high 27 points in the victory.

The loss drops Valley City to 1-2 in conference play. They return to EDC play on Thursday night when they travel to Fargo South for a 7:15 meeting with the Bruins. That game can be heard on 1490 KOVC.
