(NewsDakota.com) The Oakes High School basketball teams ended up with a split of their doubleheader against Barnes County North on Friday night.

Girls: Barnes County North 41 Oakes 35

In the first contest of the evening, the girls of Oakes had a first quarter lead of 11-7. From the middle point of the second quarter ownward, the Lady Bison (6-5 2-0 Class B District 5) pulled incrementally ahead minute by minute. BCN had a one point lead at half, three after three quarters, and finished with a six point victory.

Oakes (2-6 1-2 District 5) saw Shelby Roney leave the contest in the second half with a right ankle injury. Her status for Saturday is doubtful. Shelby Gelinske had another night of double figure points with a team high 13.

Boys: Oakes 71 Barnes County North 46

The boys of Oakes earned their first District 5 victory, due in large part to the Bison’s depth. BCN (0-5 0-2 Class B District 1) had only five players dress, and lost one of them in the early minutes of the third quarter due to fouls, forcing the Bison to play four on the court for a good part of the second half.

Oakes (3-4 1-1 District 5) had 10 different players score points, and were lead by Brody Bartholomew’s 12 points.

A quick turnaround awaits both Tornado basketball teams, as they will play on Saturday afternoon. The girls welcome former district opponent Hankinson, while the boys play host to Leola/Frederick South Dakota.

KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com will have coverage of the doubleheader, starting around 2:45 p.m. The girls are scheduled to play at 3, with the boys to follow.
