(NewsDakota.com) For the second time in as many days, the Oakes High School basketball teams split a doubleheader; this time in non-district play. The Tornado girls were taken down by their former district foes, while the boys earned a victory against an inter-state opponent.

Girls: Hankinson 64 Oakes 32

For the girls of Oakes without point guard Shelby Roney due to injury, the game did not start out the best for the hometown team. Hankinson lead 19-7 after one quarter and Oakes did not score a field goal until the 3:31 mark in the first quarter.

Lydia Hansen suffered an injury in the second quarter, and Oakes (2-7 1-2 Class B District 5) was never able to get back into the game.  The Tornadoes had a team high 15 points from Bella Hansen.

Boys: Oakes 82 Leola/Frederick South Dakota 64

The Oakes boys started out slow in the first eight minutes, trailing by five points, but then found their spark starting in the second quarter. The Tornadoes had a two point lead at half, which increased to nine after three, and 18 at the end of the contest.

The Tornadoes (4-4 1-1 Class B District 5)  had four players with double figures; lead by Bryce Meehl with 21.  Oakes also was solid from the free-throw line, going 10 of 12.

Oakes’ boys will host North Sargent in a non-district game on Tuesday, while the girls will welcome Midkota/Kensel in a District 5 game on Thursday at 6 p.m.  Thursday’s game can be heard on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com starting with coverage at 5:45 p.m.
