(NewsDakota.com) Despite being down by as many as 12 points in the second half, the Oakes High School boys basketball team won their sixth consecutive game on Monday night; this time on the road in Strasburg, defeating the previously undefeated Clippers of Strasburg/Zeeland 61-59.

The Tornadoes (8-4 2-1 Class B District 5) trailed by two at the end of the first eight minutes, and found themselves down by 10, and then 12 in the second half before finding momentum back in the fourth quarter. That momentum seemed in part to be fueled by senior guard Bryce Meehl eclipsing the 1,000 point mark in his career.

With four seconds remaining, and Oakes trailing by a point, junior guard Ethan Zetocha was able to make quite an impressive three-pointer to give the Tornadoes their sixth win in a row.

Meehl finished with 22 points, while Zetocha added 12, including the three that mattered the most at the end of regulation.

The Clippers (11-1 2-0 Class B District 6) had a team high 21 points from Jacob Eberle, who converted on a three point play with the free throw made before Zetocha’s buzzer beater.

After playing three games in a matter of four days, Oakes will have some time to rest before hosting Medina-Pingree-Buchanan on Saturday, January 31 before returning to District 5 play on Tuesday February 3 against LaMoure-Litchville/Marion in Oakes.
