N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The 2015 North Star Athletic Association tournaments will run through the Jamestown Civic Center. Both University of Jamestown basketball teams clinched the top-spot with wins over Mayville State on Saturday. The Jimmies will host a double header on Wednesday night’s opening round.

WBB: Jimmies 79, Mayville St. 68

An 8-0 run in the final six minutes of the second half put the Jimmies in front by 12. With the Jimmies leading 57-53, they got a put back by Kaeli Kraska followed by back-to-back three-point plays from Chelsey Frydenlund and Jordan Bridges. The Comets were coming off a road win over Valley City State on Wednesday and leading scorer Liza Hoglo returned after missing two weeks with an injury. That Mayville win on Wednesday gave Jamestown the opportunity to win the NSAA title outright with a victory.

Jessica Buck lead the conference champs with 19. The Jimmies will host Presentation on Wednesday night at 5:30pm in the NSAA opening round.

MBB: Jimmies 70, Mayville St. 67

On senior night, it was four-year player Taylor Newton making three key plays down the stretch as the Jimmies held off the upstart Comets. First, it was a three-pointer with the Jimmies down one at 61-60. A possession or two later, a lob across the floor to Cedric Smith put the Jimmies up four. Finally, a long pass down the floor to Brequan Tucker for an easy lay-in in the final 10 seconds sealed it for Jamestown.

Jamestown got 24 points from Tucker who is in the NAIA top-10 in scoring and fourth all-time on the Jimmie single-season scoring list.

The Jimmies will host VCSU on Wednesday night at 7:30pm. The rest of the men’s tournament is scheduled for Thursday, but the Civic Center is booked for the final night of the Region III girl’s basketball tournament.

The No.1-seed in the NSAA tournament, which both the men and women are, gets an auto-bid to the Championship game if they win the first round game. If the Jimmies win, the championships with be March 3rd at the Civic Center.
