N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Public School Board met for their second regular monthly meeting on Monday, March 16th.

The board heard from the Student Council, a STEAM report from Emma Mickelson and a Special Education Trends Report from Rhoda Young. Members of the Jamestown Girls Swimming and Diving Team came before the board as well to announce their selection as an All-American Scholar Team. The team earned a cumulative GPA of 3.87, one of the highest in the program. Coach Ben Smith stated that it was a high honor.

“We believe that education is just as important as competing. There’s been word that our GPA could put us in the top 10 teams in the nation.” Smith stated.

When the time came for Superintendent Robert Lech to give his report and legislative update, he focused on two important bills being discussed in the state senate and house; Bills 1195 and 2048. If passed, bill 1195 would allow trained teachers to carry concealed weapons on school property. Lech stated his concern with the bill.

The bill would give schools the chance to implement the legislature if they so choose. Representative Terry Wanzek was pointed out to be a sponsor of the bill. School Board Member Robert Toso made a motion to announce the board’s disapproval of the bill.

The motion was passed unanimously and a letter will be sent to district representative’s to announce the school’s position on the bill as it is currently worded.

The other bill that Superintendent Lech spoke about was 2048 and it focuses on student mental health needs in the state.

Superintendent Lech will keep up to date with the bill and keep the board informed on it’s journey through Legislature.
