Sandvik, age 82, of Valley City, ND, died Sunday, April 26th at Eventide at Hi-Acres Manor, Jamestown, ND.  A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 1st at the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home Chapel in Valley City.  Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the funeral home on Friday morning.  Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City.

Lyla Ellen Pittenger was born January 16, 1933 on a farm near Binford, ND to Clifford and Florence (Hout) Pittenger.  She grew up on farms in the Binford, Cooperstown area, and graduated from Cooperstown High School.  She married Ted Sandvik in June 1950, they lived in Cooperstown until 1957, moving first to Litchville and then to Valley City.  They had four girls and then in 1969, finally got a son. Lyla worked a variety of jobs as a clerk, waitress and bartender.  In 1983 she moved to the farm of long time companion, Jim Hendrickson near Nome, ND.  Lyla enjoyed helping on the farm, gardening, preparation and participation in parades with antique cars that Jim owned, cooking for threshing bees held on the farm.  She was an avid card player, especially pinochle and rummy, and loved making trips to the casino with friends.  She also enjoyed lefse making, Christmas baking, and was always delivering care packages of baked goods to neighbors and friends.  In March of 2010, Lyla moved to Mapleview Memory Care Center in Grand Forks.

Lyla is survived by daughters Mavis (Tom) Winkels, Queen Creek, AZ, Betty Jo Koltes, Grand Forks, ND, Nancy (Paul) Hilborn, Valley City, ND; son Tim (Mara) Sandvik, Leesburg, VA; son-in-law Paul Endres, Grand Forks; grandchildren JC (Stephanie) Sarver, Carly and Jake Endres, Tami Koltes, Beau and Gage Hilborn, and Emily and Jack Sandvik; step grandchildren Mike (Stacy Baldock) Winkels, Joe and Jen Winkels and Nathan Winkels; great grandchildren Zachary Sarver, Christian Winkels and Gage Baldock; sisters Elaine Nauman, Santa Rosa, CA and Barbara Gedrose, Orlando, FL; and sister-in-law, Fay Pittenger, Mandan, ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Florence Billet and Clifford Pittenger), sister, Marie Zimprich, brother, Larry Pittenger, and daughter, Terri Endres.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s association or Jamestown Regional Medical Center’s Hospice program, or your local hospice association.
