ND – The North Dakota legislature reached a compromise concerning the per pupil payment funding formula. Valley City State Senator Larry Robinson said the formula will see 3 percent increase. He said the House wanted to give a 2 percent increase but he and his fellow state Senators preferred a 3 percent increase per year over the next two years.

Some school Superintendents across the state wanted the legislature to increase the per pupil payment funding formula by 4 percent to help school district with declining enrollment.

Valley City Schools Superintendent Dean Koppelman said the 3 percent increase is a lot better than the 2 percent or less that some lawmakers advocated in the middle of the legislative session. Koppelman had this reaction on the passage of the K-12 education funding formula bill.

The 2015 Legislative Session ended after 78 days. House Majority leader Al Carlson said lawmakers now have the option of using 2 days in the future to make adjustments with the budget if fluctuating oil prices cause headaches.

Under the North Dakota constitution lawmakers can meet for a maximum of 80 days every other year.
