N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – After a tough loss on Thursday in the opening round of the West Region baseball tournament the Jamestown Blue Jays needed to win two in a row to reach the state tournament for the second time in three years. That’s exactly what they did; beating St. Mary’s 6-3 and Bismarck 7-0.

On Friday in win over the Saints, Scott Nelson had the best day of his high school baseball career with four hits and a completed cycle. He homered in the first inning to put the Jays on the scoreboard after St. Mary’s jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Nelson added a two-run double in fifth and an RBI triple in the seventh. In all, he finished with four RBIs.

Tanner Lunzman picked up the win on the mound and that allowed Kelley Kessler to save his ace Brian Wenzel for Saturday in the state qualifier against Bismarck High.

Wenzel certainly pitched like an ace as he held the Demons to just five hits en route to a complete game shutout. Not a single runner reached third base in the game.

The Jays will be the West’s #3 seend in next week’s state tournament because of Minot’s 14-12 win over Dickinson. Jamestown will play West Fargo at around 7:15pm on Thursday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.
