CITY, N.D. (VCSU) – The Valley City State University women’s basketball program has added an experienced point guard to its 2015 recruiting class.

Viking head coach Jill DeVries announced Monday that Ni’sja Bass, a 5-foot-6 guard from El Camino College (Calif.), has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and play for the Vikings this fall.

A native of Lakewood, Calif., and graduate of Mayfair High School, Bass played the last two seasons at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif. She will have two years of athletic eligibility remaining at VCSU. This past season she averaged 9.6 points, 4.2 assists and 5.9 rebounds as she helped lead El Camino to a 21-9 overall record and a perfect 8-0 record in the South Coast Conference.

“Ni’sja is a great addition to our 2015 recruiting class,” said DeVries. “She has had a very successful junior college career in the California league and adds depth on the perimeter for us.”

While in high school at Mayfair, Bass was named Most Valuable Player and Best Offensive Player as she helped Mayfair to two Suburban League championships. At El Camino College, she helped the team to two South Coast Conference championships, first place in the 2015 Riverside Tournament, and second place in both the 2014 and 2015 Pasadena Tournaments.

She was named 1st Team All South Coast Conference in 2015 and 2nd Team All South Coast Conference in 2014. She led El Camino in assists (4.2), steals (2.2) and minutes per game last season and shot 33 percent from 3-point range. She had a season-high 21 points in a Feb. 27 win vs. Pasadena, and reached double-digit points in 16 games last season.

“Her versatility is what really caught our eye,” said DeVries. “She has great range, can score going to the rim, and finds her teammates in positions to score.”

Bass plans to study psychology while at VCSU. Her parents are Evonne and James.

VCSU is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and plays its conference games in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA). The Vikings went 22-9 and finished second in the North Star Athletic Association last season.

Bass joins Hannah Schlecht (Guard, Forman, N.D.), Sara Schwanke (Guard, Maddock, N.D.), Nya Chakin (Center, Fargo, N.D.), Mackenzie Huber (Center, Clark, S.D.), Courtney Magnuson (Guard, Willmar, Minn.), Alli Vandal (Forward, Rolla, N.D.) and Kaitlin Connor (Center, Madison, Minn.) as signed recruits for the 2015-16 VCSU women’s basketball season.
