N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has announced that the state’s spring pheasant population is up 10 percent from last year.

According to Upland Game Management Supervisor Stan Kohn, the number of roosters hear crowing this spring was up statewide, with increases from about 2 to 12 percent in primary regions. While the spring number is a positive indicator, Kohn said it doesn’t predict the fall population.

Brood surveys provide a better estimate of summer production and what hunters can expect for fall pheasant population. Pheasant crowing counts are conducted every spring in the state. Observers drive specific routes and stop at intervals to count the number of pheasant roosters over a two-minute period during the stop.
