David Skogen, 40 of Bismarck, ND passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at his home on July 22, 2015.

Matthew was born on August 12, 1974 in Fargo, ND to Luther and Linda Skogen.  He grew up and attended school in Valley City, ND.  He graduated from Valley City High School in 1993.  He attended Valley City State University and graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1997 with a degree in Information Management.  While at UND, Matt was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and involved in student government.

Matthew married Heather Verwey on September 4, 1999 in Bismarck, ND.  They made their first home in West Burlington, IA where Matt was employed with Edward Jones.  In 2009 they moved to Bismarck.  Matt was currently employed with All State Insurance.

Matt was a HUGE UND Fighting Sioux and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.  He enjoyed officiating high school and college football.  He spread his love of sports to his West Burlington neighborhood kids by coaching their YMCA football, basketball and baseball teams.

He loved to travel, go to football, hockey, baseball games, actually Matt loved going to any sporting event.  His best moments in life were doing all of these things with his family and friends.  The joys of his life were his yellow labs Jack and Riley.

He is survived by his wife Heather Skogen, Bismarck; parents Luther and Linda Skogen, Valley City; paternal grandmother Ardell Skogen, Valley City; in-laws John and Marlys Verwey, Bismarck; sister and brother-in-law Sara and Jeremy Anderson and nieces Madeline and Lauren Anderson, Alexandria, MN; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Heidi and David Wolf and nephews Devin and Aiden Wolf, West Fargo.  Matthew is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Bill and LaVerne Sowden, paternal grandfather Melvin Skogen, uncles Jerry Sowden and LeRoy Larson, aunt Joyce Larson and cousins Chad Meyers and Kari Rios.

The funeral service for Matt will be 10:30 am Monday, July 27, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City.  Visitation will be 5 pm to 7 pm Sunday with a prayer service at 7 pm at the church.  Visitation will continue one hour before the service on Monday.
