(NewsDakota.com) The young men who make up the Oakes Post 36 American Legion baseball team have been so close so many times within the past year of earning a state tournament appearance in various sports.

The opportunity to play at at State Legion Tournament for the first time since 2002 was bestowed upon Oakes after LaMoure Post 19 won earlier in the day on Sunday, but Post 36 took it one step further and shut out Post 19 9-0 to win the Class B Southeast Region Championship.

Jon Tyre threw a two hitter and struck out 10, as Post 36 earned their third shutout of the tournament. Oakes erupted for seven runs on five hits in the fifth inning to secure the title. Oakes ended up outscoring the opposition 23-4 throughout the course of the tournament. Michael Kelly had a single, double and scored a run in the victory.

Post 19 and Post 36 both secured spots at the state tournament after Post 19 held off Enderlin Post 221 4-3. Anthony Olson earned the win, despite walking seven batters. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, LaMoure added another two in the fifth, and Enderlin scored one on the seventh, but stranded the tying and leading runs in scoring position to end the game.

Post 36 plays in the opening round of the State Class B Tournament at Townsend Field in LaMoure on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., while Post 19 takes to the field at 7:30 p.m.
