CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) A local developer plans to build upscale condominiums on a piece of property that’s been vacant for years in Valley City.

The city commission made the first step possible by approving a planning and zoning recommendation to rezone the property on July 21.

Mayor Bob Werkhoven said it will be nice to see something good constructed on this property again.

The developer plans to gut out the inside of the structure and build 20 condominium units. The project is estimated to be completed by 2016.

According to the director of the Barnes County Museum Wes Anderson the structure was built shortly after World War II as a turkey processing plant for Land O’ Lakes.

After the processing plant closed, Arkota Industries purchased it to build furniture and later the Mr. Spindle Company bought it to manufactured their products.

A fire burned the structure back in August of 1983.
