I. (Nissen) Miller, 91, of Valley City passed away July 29, 2015 at Sanford Health at Fargo, ND.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2PM Monday, August 3, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley City with Rev. JoAnne Moeller officiating.  Visitation will be from 5PM until 7PM Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church with a Prayer Service beginning at 7PM.  Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Valley City, ND.

Mabel was the youngest child born August 7, 1923 in Leola, SD to Andienne and Peter Nissen.  There was a midwife named “Mrs. James Miller”, who helped deliver her.

She graduated from Valley City High School in 1941.  Mabel worked as a secretary in several offices at the Barnes County Court House: Superintendent of Schools, county Extension, and the Treasurer’s Office.  She also worked at Northwest Nursery and as an Avon Lady.

She met the love of her life, James Miller while roller skating.  She fell down and he picked her up!  They were married June 12, 1943.  Jim and Mabel became the third generation to live on the farm, established in 1879. Mabel and Jim had 4 children.  They were soul mates for 64 years, until Jim passed away in 2008.

Mabel was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley City.  She was active in the church choir, Ladies Aid, and Quilting Circle.  She also served as a 4-H leader for many years.  Her special interests included sewing, baking, and visiting.

Mabel is survived by a son Larry (Norma) Miller, Valley City, ND; 3 daughters, Marleen (Leon) Pytlik, Valley City, ND, Diane (Larry) Kouba, Apple Valley, MN, and Sharon (Dennis) Anundson, Valley City, ND.  Mabel has 9 grandchildren: Mick (Robyn) Pytlik, West Fargo, ND, Joe (Lori) Pytlik, Horace, ND, Darin (Jen) Pytlik, Golden, CO, Lana (Miller) and George Lee, Newbury Park, CA, Lanae Miller, Chicago, IL, Sara (Kouba) and Andy DeTienne, Verona, WI, Susan Kouba (Jeff Bongofski), Apple Valley, MN, Becky (Anundson) and Aaron Schmitz, New Hope, MN, and Phillip Anundson, New Hope, MN; and 14 great grandchildren.

She was preceded  in death by her loving husband, Jim; parents; four Nissen brothers: Herman, Nanning, Peter, and Martin; two sisters, Anna (Hootie) Gebhard and Clara (Howard) Asseltine; and one grandson.

After Mabel and Jim moved off the farm they lived at the Rainbow Apartments in Valley City.  The family would like to thank her “Family of Friends” at the apartments for helping her transition to being a single person after Jim’s death.  Mabel later moved to Bridgeview Estates in Valley City.  The family also wishes to give a big thank you to the wonderful staff as residents there as well.  And finally the family wishes to thank the staff at Sanford Health in Fargo for giving both Mabel and her family such attentive care during her final hours.
