N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Stutsman County Commission will be giving local law enforcement a survey to help determine if they should implement PERS.

PERS is a system of the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System that will allow officers the ability to make their own contributions so they may retire at an earlier date. FOP Liaison Nellie Degen stated that the decision was made during this month’s Stutsman County Commissioners meeting.

“All law enforcement working for the county will have the right to vote for Law Enforcement PERS. It so important for law enforcement to protect themselves and their families future,” Degen stated.

Bowman County Sheriff Rory M. Teigen penned a letter to Degen pointing out the benefits of PERS.

“My county has been with the PERS Law Enforcement since it was offered from the State,” Teigen pointed out. “At the time, it would allow me to retire 2 years earlier than the normal PERS. Many counties have picked up the extra percentage, but here the deputies pickup their own.”

The Fraternal Order of Police is the world’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers with more than 325,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges across the U.S.
