CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The Barnes County Homemakers of Today is a volunteer organization that works to improve the quality of life for families and communities through leadership, education, and camaraderie in cooperation with the Barnes County Extension Service.

Homemaker clubs provide education that makes a difference.  According to Susan Toppen, Barnes County Family and Consumer Science Extension agent, there has been a shift in in traditional homemaking over the last two decades and the North Dakotan lifestyle has changed dramatically with many households having two parents working. Toppen believes that many women are searching for tips and tricks to manage a home and family with less time to spend there.  “It is a wonderful opportunity to gather together monthly and swap ideas with other women, parents and home managers who either have experienced or are experiencing what you are experiencing”, says Toppen.  These clubs provide women with relevant educational opportunities provided through North Dakota State University Extension Service.

The educational opportunities for this upcoming year relate to food and nutrition, health, family economics and more.  Barnes County currently has 9 active Homemaker clubs with over 93 club members and over 70 “Mailbox Members”.  Mailbox membership is offered for women who cannot participate in a local Homemakers of Today club because of time constraints.

All members have opportunities to participate in a variety of activities and events throughout the year including a yearly bus trip.  Annual club member dues are $3.00 and the dues for a “mailbox member” are $6.50.  All dues are renewed in October.  To join a club, become a mailbox member or organize a new club, contact the Barnes County Extension Office @ 845-8528 or email susan.milender@ndsu.edu.
