N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – What is the difference between service dogs, therapy dogs and emotional support animals?

That is a question posed often to the Service Dogs for America in Jud, North Dakota. Senior Administrative Coordinator Annie Strickland and Development Director Shelley Nannenga with the service state that there is a big difference between all three.

Strickland started by saying they separate the animals into three separate categories.

Strickland pointed out that service dogs are allowed access to all public places due to the Americans with Disabilities Act. Each dog is individually trained to assist one person only.

Therapy dogs are trained to comfort numerous individuals. Most visit institutions, schools, nursing homes and many other areas and are encouraged to socialize with lots of people.

Nannenga stated that you’ll never see a therapy dog doing the job of a service dog.

Emotional support animals could be any type of animal and doesn’t need to be just a dog.

There are different rules and laws in different states concerning all three categories of animals. The Service Dogs for America is always available to answer questions concerning all three categories of service animals.
