CITY, N.D. – (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City School District is in good financial shape according to Auditor Harold Rotunda despite the annual rising cost of special education commitments that cut into the school district budget.

Rotunda told the board that the state’s school funding formula makes it difficult for school districts being it’s tied into a per pupil payment.

Two years ago Valley City had an enrollment drop of 20 students resulting in a $200,000 loss to the school district budget.

In other news the school board approved of a policy that sets up school board member visits to schools on a 4 to one vote. Board member Ryan Mathias voted against the motion.

Mathias believes the policy allows the superintendent to micro-manage visits to schools while the other board members feel it’s justified to have the superintendent give a notice to principals and teachers of a future visit by a school board member.

The school board unanimously approved of setting up a school board pledge of ethics at last night’s meeting.

The school board also unanimously approved of some revisions to the school calendar.
