CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) Dave Zubrod, owner of Dave’s Pizza Corner, donated 0 for Student ON THE MOVE, to encourage the over 900 area students in kindergarten through grade 6 to be more physically active.

All area schools with students in kindergarten through grade 6 will be participating in Student ON THE MOVE starting March 6 and running through the end of March.

The schools participating include Barnes County North, Maple Valley (both Oriska and Buffalo), Litchville-Marion, St. Catherine, and Jefferson and Washington in Valley City.

Student ON THE MOVE challenges students to increase their exercise.  Each school will choose their goal of either 60 minutes per student on 5 days of the week, or ideally 60 minutes exercise on 7 days per week.

The funds donated by Pizza Corner will be used to provide an opportunity for the students of all the schools to come to the VCSU pool to swim according to  Zubrod. He said, “I want to help all students whether they live in or outside of Valley City to have a chance to swim, which is an excellent exercise.”

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) strongly recommends that children and teens do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity daily that is aerobic which should be either moderate or vigorous in intensity.

“Establishing this excellent pattern in youth will help our students develop a habit for life,” states Sharon Buhr, chair of Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership.  “In addition, students who are physically active actually learn better,” continues Buhr.

Parents of students are strongly encouraged to also set a physical activity goal and exercise with their children.   Andrea Winter, licensed registered dietitian with ON THE MOVE emphasizes that what parents do really affects the behavior of their children, and exercise is no exception. She adds, “and it’s really fun to exercise as a family.”

The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes per week of aerobic activity for adults.  In addition to that adults should do some strength training exercise on at least two days of the week.
