N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A nearly 5 1/2 hour standoff at the Rodeway Inn in West FArgo ended peacefully.

A person walking through the parking lot saw a man in a hotel room window with a gun just after 1:00 PM Friday afternoon and called police. When officers arrived, the man fired several shots at them.

Police Chief Mike Reitan says it was a very tense situation.

Police moved hotel guests to a secure area before evacuating them. Negotiators then spent hours trying to get the man to give up. Jan-Michel Wangstad, 37, surrendered just before 6:30 PM and was taken to the hospital for a psych evaluation before being taken to jail.

Roads including Main Avenue, were blocked off during the standoff. The state patrol, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, metro street crimes unit and swat were all involved in handling the situation.
