N.D. (AP) – Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Burgum has filed a petition to be placed on the June 14 primary ballot.

Burgum’s running mate, Brent Sanford, delivered about 600 signatures the North Dakota Secretary of State’s office on April 11, just hours ahead of the deadline.

North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem won the endorsement of Republican convention delegates for governor earlier this month though Burgum vowed to stay in the race.

Primary challenges are rare, although anyone may run against an endorsed candidate by collecting petition signatures from 300 voters.

In 2012, Republican candidate Kevin Cramer challenged GOP endorsed candidate Brian Kalk. Cramer defeated Kalk in the Republican primary and then went on to win in the general election.
