N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The Carrington H.S. baseball team went 4-0 over the weekend and improved to 10-1 overall on the season. Carrington and New Rockford hosted a total of 12 teams and played 21 games over the weekend. All games were scheduled for 5 innings. Carrington and Kidder County both finished the weekend with perfect 4-0 records, Larimore went 2-0, Sheyenne-New Rockford and Midkota-DP both finished 3-1. Other teams competing were Rugby (1-3), defending state champion Mayville-Portland-C-G (1-3), Bottineau (1-3), Northern Lights (0-2), Langdon (2-2) North Star (0-2), and Harvey-WC (0-4).

Braxton Hewitt smashed 2 homeruns, collecting 3 RBI, to lead the Cardinals offensively. Hewitt’s first long ball came in the top of the first inning scoring Lucas Geiszler who walked prior to the homer. The second homer, a solo shot, was a leading off the 3rd inning giving the Cards a 5-0 lead. Jayden Shipman held the Panthers to 2 runs on 3 hits and they all came in the third inning, with Hunter Hager driving in 2 runs with a basehit. Shipman would go all 5 innings picking up the win, striking out 3 and walking 3. Carrington had a total of 6 hits and committed just 1 error defensively. Payton Smith added an RBI double, and a Connor Wendel RBI groundout accounted for the other Cardinal runs.

Carrington  4     Bottineau  3

The Cardinals rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to knock off the Bottineau Braves 4-3. The Braves took the lead 3-2 in the top of the 4th inning with a solo homerun from starting pitcher Adam Stenson. Carrington’s Alex Stusynzski walked to lead-off the the Cardinal 4th inning but was relieved on the bases by pinch runner Kolten Vetter who would score the tying run on an RBI double from Brett Lyman. After a Trey Rosenau groundout that moved Lyman to third with 2 outs, Jayden Shipman delivered a clutch run scoring single that gave the Cards the win. Freshman Kyle Leapaldt picked up the victory on the mound, pitching all five innings, allowing 3 earned runs, scattering 6 hits, striking out 3, and walking 2 batters. Leapaldt also added an RBI single in the first inning. The 2 teams both played an error free game, all 7 combined runs were earned. Adam Stenson took the tough loss for the Braves.

Carrington  11     Northern Lights (Rolette-Rolla-St. John-Wolford)  1  3 innings

The Cardinals wasted no time in the top of the first inning sending 10 batters to the plate, scoring 6 runs, and rapped out 7 base hits(including 3 double). Jayden Rosenau had the only hit that produced more than 1 RBI on a 2 run single. Braxton Hewitt, Alex Stusynzski, Trey Rosenau, and Payton Smith all delivered RBI hits in the big inning. Cardinal starting pitcher Brett Lyman only had to pitch 3 innings to pickup the win. Lyman struck out 7 Comet batters, walked 1, and allowed just 1 run picking up the victory. The Cards put the game out of reach in the 2nd inning, scoring 5 more times, aided by 2 Comet errors. Trey Rosenau (2-2), Lyman (2-2), and Stusynzski (1-2), had RBI in the inning.

Langdon scored once in the bottom of the 5th inning and had the tying run at second base, but Braxton Hewitt strikeout Jacob Delvo to end the Langdon threat and preserve the 3-2 victory for Carrington. Hewitt pitched all 5 innings, striking out 3 batters, walking just 1, and allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits. Langdon cleanup batter Triston Klingenberg hit a solo homerun in the 4th inning, accounting for their first run. Carrington scored once in the second inning on a Trey Rosenau sacrifice fly that scored Alex Stusynzski who singled earlier in the inning. Carrington increased their lead to 3-0 in the third inning on an RBI double from Kyle Leapaldt that plated Jayden Shipman and a sacrifice fly from Stusynzski that scored Hewitt. Carrington collected 7 hits and 3 walks, the 7 hits were recorded by 7 different players. Carrington improves to 10-1 overall on the season and 4-0 in Region 3 play and will travel to New Rockford on Thursday to play the Black Sox of Sheyenne-NR at 4:00 P.M.
