Coach Matt Nielson said what a weird match it was, usually Valley City is stronger in the lower part of the line-up and we drop a few matches up top.  We swept #1-3 singles and then won #1 doubles.  We usually play good doubles.  We weren’t particularly good in doubles, but our singles game was a pleasant surprise.

Nielson said, Reagan and Maia won their doubles.  They were always up a break, so the match was never in question.  They continued to plug away by hitting away from Keelin and playing fun, loose tennis.  In singles, Reagan outhit Olivia in the opening game and rattled the senior that is the favorite for Miss Tennis this year.  This forced Olivia out of her usual game and Reagan kept the heat on taking the first set 6-3.  In the second set, Olivia tweaked her back and had to retire.  That first set was a huge set for Reagan.  This shows she can play with anyone in the state.  Maia had a frustrating singles opponent.  Heidi is probably the most athletic player in the East and all she does is get the ball back in play.  Maia fought of the frustration and continued to set up points and either finishing them off with an approach forehand or hitting the volley.

Nielson said, Breanna and Cali struggled on the doubles court but figured it out in singles.  In singles, they both played loose, hitting the ball with purpose and belief.  They both went to the net when the situation warranted and then put away the ball.  If these two can play the same way in their doubles as they do in their singles, they will be a tandem to be reckoned with!  Cali played against a lefty with a lot of spin.  The experience was great for her as she learned how to hit solid shots with her own spin to combat the lefty spin.  After winning the first set, Breanna went down 0-4 in the second before she decided to play again and then went on to win the next 6 games in a row to take the match.

Nielson said, Angela played her best match of her career today.  Even though she lost in three, she played smart tennis and is figuring out how to set up points and win points.  Watching the match, it seemed like we were watching #2 singles and not #6 singles.  Both players served hard and consistent and then would have hard topspin crosscourt rallies.  It was a great match to watch and a great learning experience for Angela.

Rachel, Abby, and Maia along with Hannah M, Melissa, Katelyn, and Camille played in their last home matches of their careers today.  With these players graduating, we will have almost a total change of the varsity since our first time state qualifying three years ago.  I would venture to say that after this group graduates, we could call it the end of an era.  This group was a major part in flipping our philosophy and culture and the start of our success on and off the court.

Remember the Wahpeton match is now rescheduled and the only available time was Thursday, May 12th during the school day.  Hi-Liner girls will play Wahpeton at noon on Thursday, May 12th at Island park.  This will only be the varsity (top 7).
