N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A 53-year-old Rugby man and two Clydesdale horses are dead and four other people injured after a pickup rear-ended a horse-drawn carriage west of Wolford, N.D. Saturday afternoon.

Sgt. Robert Kennedy says the carriage was heading west on Highway 17 at 4:30 p.m. when it was rear-ended by a pickup driven by a 75-year-old Wolford man. All carriage riders were ejected.

A four-year-old female was airlifted from the scene to Trinity Hospital in Minot. The 61-year-old male carriage driver was transported to Rolla Hospital then airlifted to Minot. A 53-year-old female passenger was transported to Towner County Hospital in Cando and then airlifted to Altru in Grand Forks. An 18-year-old female passenger was taken to the hospital in Rugby.

The Rugby man and the two horses died at the scene. Two other carriage passengers and the pickup driver were not injured.  All carriage riders, except the Rugby man, were from Wolford.

The crash remains under investigation with the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
