Calif. (VCSUVIKINGS.COM)– Valley City State freshman Seri Geisler (Grand Rapids, Minn.) placed fourth in women’s javelin during the USA Track & Field Junior Championships this weekend in sweltering-hot California.

Competing among numerous NCAA Division I athletes, Geisler took fourth out of 11 throwers during the competition on Friday in Clovis, Calif. The Junior Championships is limited to athletes under the age of 20.

Four of Geisler’s six throws were over 45.45 meters, and her top throw was 46.98 meters (154 feet, 2 inches). Geisler finished six feet behind second place and nine feet behind the meet champion. VCSU head coach Chris Johnson said no thrower had a personal-best on the day, in part because of the draining heat that hovered in the mid to upper 90’s.

Included in the field of throwers were several NCAA Division I athletes, the all-time national high school record holder and the 2016 national high school champion.

The meet wraps up the 2016 season for Geisler, who won the NAIA National Championship in May.

“What a season for Seri,” said Johnson. “I know she wanted a little more out of this meet, but given the conditions and circumstances she did very well. I’m proud of her for attacking every new challenge head on and for competing hard in situations which initially may have been out of her comfort zone. It is still hard to believe she just started with this event in late February.”
