N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Police Department may need total radio replacement in the next two years.

During a Fire & Police Committee meeting, Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger reported that the current radio system utilized by the department and Law Enforcement Center would become no longer serviceable. Chief Edinger pointed out that the department and LEC’s equipment were developed around the same time.

Edinger stated that radios of that kind are usually built to last longer than intended, but if no parts or services are available for that brand of radio, they would have no other way to communicate. Edinger brought forth a rough cost estimate from Jamestown Communications to replace the entire system.

Currently the state is looking at an inter-operable network that would require updates to all agencies in the state, but Edinger pointed out that any radio system the department adopts would be compatible.

In other Jamestown Police business, work has continued on the Law Enforcement shooting range, which has been shutdown until requirements are met. Edinger stated that dirt is being hauled to the site from the TRAC project and the Edgewood project to raise the berms for safety improvements.

When asked where the officers were practicing, Edinger stated that they have been unable to without a location.

Once improvements are made and all stipulations have been met, the Department will be able to practice at the range again.
