(NewsDakota.com) The lone undefeated team in the 2016 North Dakota State Class B Babe Ruth Tournament was the one holding the championship trophy on Tuesday afternoon, but it did not come easy.

In spite of having a 5-0 lead after five and a half innings, Park River needed every bit of defensive muscle to hold off a late surge by Carrington. In the end, Carrington stranded runners in scoring position in the seventh inning, one of them representing the tying run, as Park River defeated Carrington 5-3.

It was the most runs in the tournament that Park River allowed. Carrington put a three spot up in the bottom of the sixth. Seth Nelson was the losing pitcher of record for Carrington, lasting two and one thirds innings, allowing three runs on nine hits. Kyle Leopaldt and Drew Page each had doubles for Carrington.

Ironically enough, both Park River and Carrington face each other in the final game of the first day of the Class B State Legion Tournament which commences Wednesday in Carrington. Coverage of the entire tournament can be heard on KDAK-AM 1600 and NewsDakota.com.
