N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A man who held Fargo Police at bay for several hours during a standoff last night ended with the man’s death.

The man was barricaded inside the Southeast Human Services Center, next door to Big Top Bingo, armed with a pistol. Deputy Police Chief Ross Renner says the man had been talking by phone with swat team negotiators for several hours when a shot was fired from inside the offices:

Unable to make further phone contact with the man, police entered the building and found him dead. Renner says police did not fire any shots but declined to say whether the man’s death was suicide at this time.

The incident started around 7 when the 49-year old from Fargo entered the offices and told people to leave the building. Renner says the man was “distraught” but didn’t hurt anyone. His name has not been released.

Police have not determined why he came to the center which provides mental health services and addiction counseling among other services.
