CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) Regalia, a series of 19 mezzotints by print maker Linda Whitney is now inside the  Mercy Hospital Gallery in Valley City. Whitney is professor emeritus of art from VCSU and shows her mezzotints throughout the USA, Canada, Mexico and Europe.

The exhibition will be in the Gallery until September 30, 2016. It is located on the first floor in the corridor of CHI Mercy Health and Sanford Health.

All of the work honors the beautiful outfits and the dancers of the powwow tradition.  Whitney states, “The coming of the Europeans to this Turtle Island brought about the near annihilation of the people of this region.  These historic and grand cultures were all but decimated in a few short years and those left standing were cheated of their traditions, religion, and freedoms.  But, the ancient voices were not silenced and the drumbeats are strong again.  The celebration of the Powwow is one public declaration of the strength and tenacity of the indigenous cultures of this continent.  The magnificent regalia is a reminder of this complex history and a symbol of the texture of contemporary times. I wish to honor and celebrate the people and their culture.”

All of the mezzotints have been created since late 2014 and the body of work contains numerous prints that have been included in national and international exhibitions. Several were part of the Third International Mezzotint Festival, 2015 held in Ekaterinburg, Russia. (Two mezzotints have taken first place awards (Best in Show) in international exhibitions across the USA, two others were awarded merit awards and another was given a purchase award.
