N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A four-legged friend will be the newest member of the Jamestown Fire Department.

Chloe is a purebred bloodhound and will be used for Jamestown Fire Department Rescue situations. Jamestown Fire Chief Jim Reuther stated that Chloe will be fully cared for by himself.

Ruether stated that Chloe was donated to the Jamestown Fire Department and Jamestown Community by Ryan & Erin Solberg of Minnesota. Erin stated that they donated Chloe in order to better serve Jamestown.

The Solberg’s have been breeding dogs for 7 years and have never bred a dog that went on to be a Search and Rescue animal. Chief Reuther stated that he first had thoughts of having a dog for the department back when he saw a bloodhound in action during a drowning incident on the reservoir.

After talks with both Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger and Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser and over one year of research, Chief Reuther decided it was time.

Chief Reuther stated that he’s hopeful if things work out with Chloe, she’ll be ready within in a year with the right training. But with it being a new experience for himself and the department, he’s unsure of when she’ll be trained enough to serve.

Chief Reuther will continue bringing Chloe to the department for half-days until she gets acclimated to the sights and sounds of the department.

He stated that she’s already found her voice and has begun making herself welcome within the building. Chief Reuther will be taking some classes to better prepare himself to use Chloe in the field.
