CITY,ND (VCSUVIKINGS.COM) – VCSU freshman Cameron Rall shot a 1-under par 70 on Thursday as he won medalist honors and led the Viking men’s golf team to a team title at the Cougar Invite.

It is the third straight year the Viking men have won the Cougar Invite, hosted by Minnesota-Morris at Pomme de Terre Golf Course.

Playing in just his third career college tournament, Rall earned the first medalist honors of his college career by shooting the tournament’s only round under par. Rall’s score of 70 (1-under) was one shot better than Jamestown’s Mitch Hagenson, who finished in second.

Rall’s low round paced the Viking men to a 304 team score, which was good for first place among 11 teams. The Vikings beat second place (Bismarck State and St. Scholastica) by five shots.Another VCSU freshman, Jeremie Pasitney, tied for 15th with a round of 77. Kyle Wiebe placed 20th with a 78, and Jared Lentz shot 79 to tie for 21st and round out the VCSU team score. Tyler Baukol carded an 80 (25th) and Collin Hoss shot an 85 (42nd).Eleven teams and a total of 60 golfers played in the men’s tournament.

On the women’s side, Valley City State junior Nicole Heinitz had a Top 10 finish as the Viking women placed sixth as a team.Heinitz carded a round of 96, which tied her for ninth place. VCSU’s women shot a 443 team score for sixth place out of nine teams. A total of 45 women played the tournament.

 VCSU’s Haley Christofferson finished in the top half with a 105 total and a 21st place finish. Megan McNamee (118) placed 31st, and Tory Anderson (124) took 35th to round out VCSU’s team score.

 Up next: Viking golf wraps up the fall portion of its schedule with the NSAA Fall Championships on Sept. 26-27. The 36-hole conference tournament will be played at Wedgwood Cove Golf Course in Albert Lea, Minn.
