JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Dave Smette of Jamestown will be spending the next two weeks helping hurricane victims in Florida.

Dave Smette is a Volunteer with The American Red Cross Association. He’s been deployed to Tallahassee, Florida for the Hurricane Matthew relief effort.

Smette is traveling nearly 1,600 miles and will likely remain there for two weeks. He’s traveling with another volunteer from Minnesota and both will be using their trucks to distribute food.

Smette pointed out that he’s been deployed before for hurricane efforts when Hurricane Sandy struck the East coast in 2012, becoming the second-costliest hurricane in United States history.

According to the Weather Channel, more than 100 have been killed by Hurricane Matthew as it moved through the Caribbean. Hurricane Matthew is expected to to strike the U.S. with a “Sandy-Like” surge.
