CITY (NewsDakota.com) The opening day of the 2016 Barnes County Girls basketball tournament saw a couple of competitive contests, while the two in the middle of the foursome were one-sided affairs from the early onset.

#5 Enderlin 48 #4 Oakes 31

In the first of the quadruple header, the victorious Eagles were actually trailing the Tornadoes at the half by three points, before they came out firing in the third quarter, going on an 11-2 run to pull ahead and never look back.

Enderlin eight-grader Katelyn Tingley had 12 points, all coming via four three-pointers. Nichole Schmitz lead the Tornadoes with a dozen points.

#1 LaMoure-Litchville-Marion 52 #8 Griggs County Central 21

The tenth rated team in all of Class B Basketball, and defending tournament champions improved to 2-0 after a convincing win over the Cougars. LLM’s lead after one quarter was 23-4, and added another 11 in the second eight minutes to GCC’s two points.

The Loboes had a team high 18 points from Jackie Meiklejohn, which included four three-point baskets in the first half. Alicia Larsgaard scored nine points for the Cougars.

#2 Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page 56  #7 Maple Valley 8

The F-S-H-P Spartans jumped out to a 9 point lead and never looked back en route to a 56-8 win earning a trip to the championship semifinals. Cierra Jacobson had 20 points and 8 rebounds for F-S-H-P, Zoie Breckheimer scored 10. For Maple Valley Sierra Wendt had 6 of the teams 8 points.

#3 Barnes County North 53 #6 Sargent Central 34

The Bison defense forced 30 Cadet turnovers to help advance Barnes County North in the winners bracket after taking their opening  round game 53-34 over Sargent Central. At the end of the opening quarter BCN was up 9-8 and pushed their lead to 25-15 at the half. Sargent Central started the 3rd period with 6-0 run to make it a 4 point game. That’s the closest they’d get after The Bison score the quarters final 11 points.

BCN had 3 in double figure led by Hannah Wilson’s 12, Tess Scott and Jayda Haugen both knocked down 11 a piece. Sargent Central’s Amber Peterson just missed a double double with 13 points and 9 boards. 

Friday’s play starts at 10 a.m. with Oakes facing Griggs County Central in the first of two consolation contests. Maple Valley and Sargent Central play at 11:30. In the championship round Enderlin and LaMoure-Litchville-Marion meet at 1 followed by Finley Sharon Hope Page and Barnes County North at 2:30pm. All games are on Q101 and Newsdakota.com
