CITY, N.D. – (NewsDakota.com) The terms of the resignation agreement with Police Chief Fred Thompson was released on December 9th.

Under the agreement the city will pay Thompson a severance of $110,000 on January 3rd 2017. It states that Thompson will have no duties or authority to act as the Chief of Police in Valley City beginning immediately. City Administrator David Schelkoph told reporter Steve Urness that a couple of weeks ago the city decided to move in a different direction concerning the police department.

On December 8th, the Valley City commission unanimously approved of a resignation agreement with Police Chief Fred Thompson during a special city commission meeting.

Several city officials told Thompson he brought a higher level of professionalism to the department since becoming the Police Chief back in July of 2012 following the retirement of former Police Chief Dean Ross.

Valley City Mayor Dave Carlsrud thanked Thompson for his service to the city.

City Attorney Russell Myhre talked about the respect he has for Thompson’s professionalism.

During the special city commission meeting Thompson thanked the commission for their support during his four years of service to the city. He told the media he will pursue another opportunity, but didn’t give details.

Schelkoph said Lt. Phil Hatcher is the acting Police Chief of Valley City. He said the search for a new chief of police will begin in January. He also talked Thompson’s for his professionalism.

Acting Police Chief Phil Hatcher said the resignation of Thompson was a surprise to him and other police officers.

In August of 2016, the city of Valley City said Thompson withdrew his resignation, submitted to the city back in October of 2015.
