CITY (VCSUVikings.com)- VCSU hosted Dakota State University in an NSAA doubleheader Friday. In the 1st contest the women rallied to win 66-61. The Trojans men handed The Vikings their 1st conference loss of the year 65-48. Both teams are back in action Saturday facing Bellevue University. WBB: VCSU 66 DaSU 61

The Valley City State University women’s basketball team outscored Dakota State 25-9 in the third quarter Friday as the Vikings roared back from an 11-point halftime deficit for a 66-61 victory.

Playing their home conference opener, the Vikings fell behind 39-28 at halftime after Dakota State shot 59 percent in the first half. VCSU opened the third quarter with a 16-2 run though, taking a 44-41 lead with 5 minutes left in the period. The Vikings closed the quarter with a 53-48 lead and never trailed in the fourth en route to the North Star Athletic Association victory.

It was Valley City’s eighth straight win as they improved to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Dakota State drops to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the NSAA.

The Trojans used hot shooting to build a quick lead in the first half, which included 19 first-half points by Kennedy Wagner. Dakota State was 13-for-22 from the field in the first half and went 3-for-5 on 3’s. Their shooting fell off in the second half as the Trojans went just 6-for-22 from the field over the final 20 minutes.

VCSU shot 43 percent for the game (24-56), went just 16 percent on 3’s (3-19) and was 68 percent at the free throw line. Dakota State finished at 43 percent overall (19-44), 31 percent on 3’s (4-13) and 83 percent on free throws.

Wagner led all scorers with 24 points for the Trojans. BreeAna Olson added 17 points.

Allí Vandal and Kennedy Henningsgard both posted 14 points and seven rebounds to lead VCSU. Georgia Williams scored 11 points, and Lexi Lennonposted eight points and seven rebounds.

VCSU held a 32-24 edge on the glass, including an 11-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Vikings had 15 assists, 10 steals, 4 blocks and 16 turnovers.

Dakota State finished with nine assists, six steals and 21 turnovers.

 

MBB: DaSU 65 VCSU 48

Dakota State handed the Valley City State men’s basketball team its first conference loss of the season Friday night, downing the Vikings 65-48 in Valley City.

The Trojans outscored the Vikings 36-24 in the second half, pulling away for the road victory and ending VCSU’s six-game win streak. Leading 35-28 early in the second half, Dakota State used a 9-2 run to establish a double-digit lead at 44-30. The Vikings would get no closer than 11 the rest of the way and Dakota State coasted down the stretch.

Valley City State drops to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Dakota State improves to 4-8 overall and is now 1-2 in the North Star Athletic Association.

The difference Friday night came in shooting as the Trojans sank 50 percent of their shots (26-52) while the Vikings went just 35 percent from the field (19-54).

Dakota State had four players score in double figures and were led by Tanner Heiser, who finished with 19 points and was 5-for-10 from 3-point range. Kevin Daniels posted 15 pints; Kyle Kilgore had 11 points and nine rebounds; and Justin Folkers posted 10 points and seven rebounds.

Austin Dunbar posted a double-double for VCSU with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Rashad Satahoo scored 15, and Ellwood Ellenson added 10 points and five rebounds.

VCSU shot 31 percent on 3’s (5-16) and was 5-for-9 at the free throw line. Dakota State shot 44 percent from 3-point range (10-23) and went 3-for-6 at the free throw line.

The Trojans held a 34-27 advantage on the glass. VCSU had a 5-4 advantage in offense rebounds. VCSU committed 10 turnovers while Dakota State gave the ball away 13 times.
