(VCSUVikings.com)- The Valley City State basketball teams dropped a road doubleheader Friday night at Dickinson State.

VCSU jumped out to big first-half leads in both games, but couldn’t hold on in the North Star Athletic Association conference games. The Vikings lost 71-60 in the women’s game and 60-57 in the men’s game.

Up next: VCSU is back home for conference games next weekend. The Vikings host Mayville State at 5:30/7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27. VCSU then hosts Waldorf University on Saturday at 3/5 p.m.

Women: #24 Dickinson State 71, VCSU 60
Valley City State started fast, building a 26-15 lead after the first quarter Friday night, but Dickinson State outscored the Vikings 32-19 in the second and third quarters to retake the lead for good.

VCSU scored six straight points late in the third quarter to take a 45-40 lead with 1:49 left in the period. The Blue Hawks went on a 15-0 run over the next six minutes, building a 55-45 lead with six minutes remaining in the game. The Vikings would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

The Vikings shot just 31 percent in the game, finishing 22-for-70 from the field. The Vikings were 4-for-22 on 3’s and 12-for-18 on free throws. Kennedy Henningsgard scored 13 points as part of four Vikings in double figures. Georgia Williams had 12 points and Hannah Schlecht finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Alli Vandal scored 10 points, and Lexi Lennon had nine points and 12 assists.

Lorna Shepherd scored 20 points for the Blue Hawks, who shot 40 percent from the field. Taylor Henningsgard had 19 points.

VCSU drops to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Dickinson State improves to 15-5 overall and 8-1 in the NSAA. The Vikings are now tied for third in the conference standings with Mayville State.

Men: Dickinson State 60, VCSU 57
The Viking men held a 32-23 halftime lead Friday in Dickinson but could not hold off the Blue Hawks in the second half.

VCSU extended the lead to 38-27 early in the second half before the Blue Hawks ripped off a 15-2 run to take a 42-40 lead. After trailing by as many as six points, the Vikings fought back to within 58-57 with 10 seconds left. VCSU forced a Blue Hawk turnover with five seconds left but could not get a shot off before turning it back to the Blue Hawks. Dickinson made a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Jayden Ferguson had 23 points and six rebounds for VCSU. Rashad Satahoo made three 3’s and poured in 21 points for the Vikings.

VCSU shot 37 percent overall (20-54), 27 percent on 3’s (4-15) and 72 percent at the line (13-18).

Ryan Clark had 14 points for the Blue Hawks, who shot 42 percent from the field. Dickinson held a 47-28 advantage on the glass, including a 15-5 edge in offensive rebounds.

VCSU drops to 12-11 overall and 4-5 in conference play. Dickinson State improves to 15-7 overall and 7-2 in the NSAA.
