N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The Carrington Cardinals and Edgely-Kulm-Montpeiler (EKM) Rebels will square off in the Region 3 girls basketball title game on Thursday night at Jamestown Civic Center for the second straight year. Carrington defeated EKM 48-37 in the 2016 title game.  EKM defeated Medina-Pingree-Buchanon (MPB) Thunder 46-41 and Carrington came from behind again to defeat Lamoure-Litchville-Marion (LLM) Loboes 41-39.

The Carrington Cardinals took there first lead of the game with under 2 minutes to play on an Emerson Hoornaert 3 pointer and held the Loboes to just 4 points in the 4th quarter to advance to the championship game. The Loboes did not score in the final 4:43 of the contest. Hoornaert scored 8 of her team high12 points in the final quarter to aid the Cardinal comeback. The Cardinals outscored the Loboes 12-4 in the final frame and 31-12 in the last 2 games in the 4th quarters combined. The Cards outscored the Loboes 19-8 in the District 5 semifinal games 4th quarter also to pull off a 53-52 victory.

Kadyn Mehring, starting in place of the injured Haley Hewitt, played a big role early on scoring all 7 of her points in the first half to help keep the Cards close to the Loboes. The Cards got a solid effort off the bench from Freshman Bella Hone, scoring 7 points and grabbing 3 rebounds (all offensive rebounds). McKenzie Johnson led the Cards with 8 rebounds (5 offensive), and added 2 assists, along with 3 steals. Maara Nelson and Hoornaert both dished out a game high 4 assists. Nelson also added 5 rebounds. Jill Endres grabbed 7 rebounds , 2 steals, and a game high 5 blocked shots.

The Loboes were paced by Anna Holen’s game high 18 points (16 first half) and 7 points each from Ellie Holen and KindraHamlin. Anna Holen also led the Loboes with 7 rebounds and had a game high 4 steals.

Carrington improved to 21-2 overall and LLM dropped to 16-8 on the season.

The Rebels of EKM forged an alliance with the free throw line, drilling 21-28 (75%), accounting for almost half of the teams 46 total points. The Thunder of MPB would take just 6 free throw attempts in the game, making 3-6. Katie Entzi led the Rebels with a game high 15 points and 8 rebounds. Tallie Hanson added 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. Kaitlyn Schiele also added 7 points and 5 rebounds for the Rebels. 

MPB was paced by Megan Moser’s tram high 12 points and 8 rebounds. Mariah Wick added 10 points for the Thunder. Halle Uehran finished with 6 points, 3 blocked shots, and 3 rebounds. MPB dropped to 17-6 overall and EKM improved to 18-6 overall. MPB will play LaMoure at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday for the third place game and Carrington and EKM will  follow at 7:30 for the Region 3 title.
