(NewsDakota.com)—Kaitlyn Schiele drilled a 3-pointer with .3 seconds to go in regulation to tie the game at 42-42 and the Rebels of Edgely-Kulm-Montpeiler (EKM) went on to defeat the defending Region 3 champion Carrington Cardinals 51-42 in OT. Schiele’s basket, just her second field goal of the night sparked the Rebels into the OT session as EKM outscored the Cards 9-0 in the 4 minute extra session to capture the Region 3 crown. Schiele finished the game with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Tallie Hanson had the hot hand for the Rebels, especially in the first half, scoring 17 of her game high 22 points in the first 16 minutes. Hanson scored 12 points in the second quarter and 17 of her teams 26 first half points. After Carrington took an early lead in the second quarter thanks to a 9-0 run that put the Cards up 15-11, Hanson countered with her own 8-0 run, including a pair of 3-pointers, that put the Rebels up 19-15. Hanson added a game high 8 rebounds. Katie Entzi added 12 points and 7 rebounds for the Rebels. EKM made 9 of 10 free throws in the OT session to seal the victory.

Carrington was paced by Emerson Hoornaert’s 13 points, included 8 points in the 4th quarter to push Carrington into the lead late in the game. Hoornaert added 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. Jill Endres added 10 points, 2 blocked shots, and 3 rebounds for the Cards. Abigail Jarrett scored 8 points and Maara Nelson added 5 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals. Haley Hewitt, who injured her knee against EKM in the District 5 championship game played just a few minutes in the contest and never had a chance to get into the flow of the game. Hewitt, a junior all district player, will have surgery on her right knee for the second time within 2 years sometime in March. The Cardinals finished the season with a 21-3 overall record. EKM improved to 19-6 and will head to next week’s state class B tournament in Grand Forks.

3RD Place–Medina-Pingree-Buchanon (MPB)  55  Lamoure-Litchville-Marion (LMM)  36

The Thunder of MPB jumped out to a commanding 24-6 halftime lead and held off a couple of LMM runs in the second half to defeat the Loboes 55-36. The Thunder held LMM scoreless in the 2nd quarter and the Loboes made just 2 0f 29 field goals for 6 percent in the opening16 minutes. MPB had a balanced offensive attack led by Megan Moser and Taylor Sabinash with 11 points each. Amanda Allen added 10 points and Halle Uehran chipped in 9 points. Sabinash had a team high 6 rebounds and 2 assists. The Thunder shot 56 percent from the field, making 23 of 41 attempts.

The Loboes were paced by Anna Holen’s game high 12 points and 7 rebounds. Holen would also add 3 steals and 2 assists. Kallene Klever and Ellie Holen added 7 points. Ellie Holen added 5 rebounds and a game high 5 steals. LMM ended the season 16-9 overall and MPB finished 18-6.
