CITY (VCSUVikings.com) – The Mayville State University softball team picked up three wins Sunday at Valley City State University.
The Comets held on for a victory in the resumption of a game halted on Saturday night, and then swept a doubleheader from the Vikings to cap a 3-0 day.
VCSU won the series opener Saturday in Valley City, 10-7. Game two that night was halted due to darkness with Mayville State leading 7-3 in the seventh inning. That game was finished Sunday afternoon and Mayville held on for an 8-6 victory. The Comets went on to win both ends of the schedule Sunday doubleheader, 5-3 and 12-1.
Valley City State drops to 13-19 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Mayville State improves to 11-12 overall and 4-4 in the North Star Athletic Association.
Mayville State 8, VCSU 6
Leading 5-3 entering the seventh inning, the Comets added three insurance runs they desperately needed. After going up 8-3, the Comets had to hang on in the bottom of the seventh. The Vikings plated three runs and had the tying run in scoring position before Mayville State worked out of the jam.
Mayville State finished with eight runs on 10 hits. The Vikings had six runs on nine hits. Each team committed three errors.
Daisy Macias, Nina Gurgian and Haley Kravetz had two hits each for the Comet offense.
Tatum Lundin, Jayme Menard and Kelsey Hamade all had two hits for the Vikings. Lundin drove in three runs.
Haley Kravetz earned the win after going 6 1/3 innings, giving up nine hits and six runs. Share Kimball pitched the final two outs to earn a save. Kathleen Gallais took the loss for VCSU, allowing four hits and five runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Mayville State 5, VCSU 3
Jayme Menard’s 2-run home run highlighted a 3-run first inning for VCSU, but that’s all the offense the Vikings could muster in a 5-3 loss Sunday.
Mayville State pushed across all five of its runs in the fourth inning, including a go-ahead two-run double off the bat of Daisy Macias. VCSU scored its three runs on 12 hits. Mayville had five runs on six hits, including five hits in the fourth inning.
Haley Kravetz picked up the win for Mayville after pitching a complete game. She scattered 12 hits over seven innings and did not walk a batter.
Ashley Metcalf also went the distance but took the loss for VCSU. Her only hiccup came in the fourth inning. She finished with six innings pitched, allowing six hits and five runs – only two of which were earned.
Kelli Moore had three hits for VCSU. Menard had two hits and drove in two runs, and Cassie Pautz had two hits as well.
Nina Gurgian had two hits and Macias drove in two runs for the Comet offense.
Mayville State 12, VCSU 1
It was all Comets in the final game Sunday as they racked up 10 hits and 12 runs and ended the game early by run-rule.
VCSU struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Comets answered with five runs in the bottom. They would put the game away with five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The game ended after five innings.
Share Kimball pitched a complete-game for the Comets, giving up just one run and six hits. She walked one and struck out seven. Morgan Nalley took the loss for VCSU after giving up 10 hits and 12 runs – seven earned – in 3 2/3 innings. The Vikings were hampered by four errors in the game.
Kathleen Gallais and Kelsey Hamade each had two hits for VCSU.
Kembell homered and drove in four runs to help her cause at the plate. Danielle Sheridan, Lauren Coronado and Daisy Macias each had two hits for the Comets.
