S.D.(VCSUVikings.com)- Valley City State University’s Mark Potts has been named the North Star Athletic Association Sports Information Director of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday during the NSAA Summit meetings in Watertown, S.D.

Potts, VCSU’s director for sports information since 2013, was one of several people honored with awards Wednesday. Ed Lehotak of Bellevue University was named the Athletic Director of the Year, Marie Miller of Presentation College was named the Faculty Athletic Representative of the Year, and Brad Gilbert from Dakota State was named the Athletic Trainer of the Year.

Potts just completed his fourth season leading the Sports Information Department at VCSU. Under his guidance, Viking Athletics has greatly improved its presence online and on social media. He is responsible for overseeing the VCSU Athletics website – vcsuvikings.com – and social media accounts.

This year Potts led the creation of a new VCSU Athletics mobile app in conjunction with SIDhelp. The app launched in January and has been downloaded by 650 users. Potts took on a large role in the revamped Viking Awards Banquet this spring and the first North Star Baseball Honors Banquet, held in Valley City before the NSAA Baseball Championships. He also served as tournament SID for the Baseball Championships.

On a day-to-day basis Potts is responsible for all VCSU athletic publicity, including communication with local media, stats and record-keeping, stories, photos and videos. He also oversees VCSU’s live video streaming of home events and various aspects of game management.

Potts will now be nominated by the conference for the NAIA Sports Information Director of the Year Award.
