CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Kellen Westman and Clorissa Nelson of Valley City were awarded first place prizes for their essay’s that focused on why it’s important to vote.

Westman is a 3rd grader from Valley City. He said it was important for many people to have a decision in the voting process. He received a 1st place award for his essay in the Statewide competition of the North Dakota AmVets Americanism Essay Contest. He also received a 1st place award for his essay in the Barnes County contest.

Nelson is a 5th grader from Valley City. She said voting gives you a voice, it’s important for people to vote for others in this country. She received a 1st place award for her essay in the Statewide competition of the North Dakota AmVets Americanism Essay Contest. She also received a 3rd place award for her essay in the Barnes County contest.

The two received a monetary gift of $100 apiece for being a statewide winner. Both of their essay’s will be submitted for the national contest, the winners will be announced later this year.
