Lyle Komrosky, age 82, was called home by the Lord to the glory of heaven on Friday, June 16, 2017. He passed peacefully in his sleep at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, ND following a brief illness with lung cancer.

Gene was born on September 11, 1934 to Ed and Amelia (Krege) Komrosky. While born in his grandparents’ home in Columbia, SD, Gene was a life-long resident of Barnes County, ND.

After finishing his education, Gene enlisted in the Navy in January of 1952. As many sailors before him, he completed his training at the Naval Station in Great Lakes, IL. After several assignments to other naval bases in Florida and California, Gene was tasked to serve on the historic battleship U.S.S. Midway, and consequently was deployed in the Korean Theater of Operations.

It was during his enlistment in the Navy, that Gene returned to ND and married Hilma Blumler on October 30, 1954; a marriage separated only by his passing and enduring over 62 years. The Lord blessed this marriage with four children: Paul, Ruth, Alan and Jason.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1955, the young couple returned to the Valley City area and eventually settled in Green Township. There Gene bought a small farmstead and they began to raise their family. After working in the area for a time, Gene took a job with the Burlington Northern Railroad. He was always very proud of his work and his association with the railroad. He was highly regarded by his peers, and retired from BN with 40 years of service. After his retirement, Gene longed to ride the Amtrak railroad out to Seattle, WA and back which he did a number of times throughout the years. In 1983, Gene and Hilma bought the Midtown Motel in Valley City which they operated successfully for a number of years.

Gene’s life was typified by his love for the Lord and his love for his family. Always a strong and stable provider, Gene and Hilma instilled in their children, and others around them, the importance of God’s Word as a foundation for life. For many years he served on the church council for St. Paul’s Lutheran, and cultivated a great love for God’s grace of salvation to those around him. By his example, he served with each of his sons at some point while on the church council.

“Legacy” is a term that many men strive to attain in their passing. The world’s definition of this term meant nothing to Gene. His “legacy” will take on a much different and more meaningful form as expressed in the family he leaves for a time. One of his great joys was being involved with various projects with his family members. Over the years they completed countless tasks, including building improvements, rental renovations and dinosaur fossils. Another great joy of his life was family vacations. From their origins in the “old school bus” in younger years to vacations involving his grown children and grandchildren, Gene planned and looked forward to these special times.

Gene will be remembered as a consummate family man. He will be regarded as a man who was steady, trustworthy and quietly confident. Gene did not lead with many words, rather he guided those around him with thoughtful words.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife Hilma, and children Paul, Ruth (Ken Berg), Alan (Carol Belgaarde), Jason (Laura), and Loan (Jerry Tindal). He is a grandfather to 15, and counts numerous individuals in his extended family.  He is also survived by his brothers Wayne, Dave (Eileen), Jim, and a sister, Phyllis.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, a brother Daryl and a sister Halcie.
