N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Finance & Legal Committee met Tuesday evening in Jamestown.

The committee approved a request from the Jamestown Stutsman Development Corporation for $3,200 from Economic Development funds to update the JSDC Strategic Plan with the City share to be $2,560. They also approved new city Health Insurance Plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield and authorized a City Certification of Significant Community Support for the submission of a Community Facilities application on behalf of the James River Valley Library System for a USDA-Rural Development grant.

Later in the meeting, Deputy Auditor Jay Sveum approached the committee to address their current residency requirements for employment within the city.

Sveum says they found that most communities they asked had abolished thier residency requirements. Sveum said there have been times an open position had been applied for and he had to turn them away due to the requirements.

Sveum recommended that if the city were to keep a residency requirement to install some boundaries to it, rather than limiting it just to the city or four townships surrounding Jamestown.

Mayor Katie Andersen said she was fine looking at changing the policy.

The council unanimously approved and will look further into the matter at later council meetings.
