N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – North Dakota has a deep history when it comes to certain things like railroads and German/Russian immigration, but one thing that has also stood the test of time is beer.

A new book titled “North Dakota Beer: A Heady History” written by author Alicia Underlee Nelson focuses on beer and it’s roots in North Dakota history. Nelson says she had an interest in writing about the history of beer in the state for some time.

Nelson had originally held the idea of writing a book about the resurgence of breweries in the state, with roughly 12 new breweries opening in the last 6 years. Research into the history of beer made her realize that a book could be written just on the history alone for the popular adult beverage.

Nelson’s book takes a look not just at beer and its history, but breaks it down by region as well. Topics like prohibition and the strong drinking scene in the Jamestown region is one of many. Nelson says Jamestown had two breweries that brewed for just over 1,000 people in around 1880 to 1889. It also was home to 23 different saloons.

Her book also features Jamestown as a very active community to fight for prohibition before it became a state. Her book, which is available now, can be found on Amazon or her website prairiestylefile.com.
