Sweeney, 78, Valley City, North Dakota, formerly of Marquette, Michigan died September 12, 2017 at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City, after a short struggle with cancer.

Doris Andrea Sweeney was born on November 8, 1938 to Charles Buxton, Sr. and Lorena (Tuffs) Buxton in Johannesburg, Michigan. She attended school there and some years later her family moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was there that she met her loving husband Martin Sweeney. They shared 53 years of marriage together and raised two children.

She was an RN at Marquette General Hospital. Doris spent her years being a dedicated woman of Christ. She and her husband took in and cared for many abused women and their children. For several years, she cared for teenage children and led them to Christ. Overall she opened her home for 19 young adults so that they would have a better life and helped them graduate from high school. She still heard from many that she helped.

She loved to have friends over for dinner and after, playing hours of card games. She loved flowers and created beautiful flower gardens. Doris loved to sew and quilt, giving many things to the needy overseas. She also painted many pictures and was involved with Art on the Rocks and The Outback exhibits.

Doris was a member of Grace Free Lutheran Church.

Doris had a special love for her grandchildren, Aereauna Houle and Trevin Hass and her great-grandchildren, Allison and Ryen Nguyen.

She is survived by her son, David Sweeney, Sanford, Maine; a daughter, Andrea Sweeney, Valley City; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brother, Richard (Nancy) Buxton, Windham, Maine; and many cousins and her many friends. She has touched so many lives and she will be missed.
