N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—–Carrington quarterback Hayden Schmitz attempted 1 pass in the second half but made it the biggest play of the day connecting with teammate Jayden Shipman on a 40 yard TD pass. The play broke a 14-14 tie game and gave the Cardinals a 20-14 victory over the Oak Grove Grovers. Schmitz finished the day completing 6 of 9 attempts for 115 yards, 1 TD, and no interceptions.

The game had just 1 touchdown scored in the first 3 1/2 quarters, and 4 TD’s scored in a 5:21 stretch in the final 6:28 0f the game. The Cards started the game with a 13 play 65 yard TD drive capped by a 23 yard TD run from Drew Page giving Carrington an early 7-0 lead. The drive lasted 7:25 and was directed into a stiff 25 MPH wind. Neither team would add to the scoreboard until the 6:28 mark of the 4th quarter.

Oak Grove’s standout running back Ben Hoggarth scored on a 4 yard TD run with 6:28 to play and tied the game at 7-7. Hoggarth finished the day with a game high 32 carries and  176 rushing yards. Carrington held Hoggarth to a meager 20 yards in the first half on 10 attempts but Hoggarth exploded in the second half with 156 yards. The Cards Lucas Geiszler returned the ensuing kickoff 43 yards to the Grover 40 yard line. After a Drew Page 33 yard run to the 7 yard line, add a half the distance horse collar penalty to the 3 yard line. Kaden Wolsky scored on the next play with 5:58 to play, giving the Cards a 14-7 lead. The Grovers quickly marched back down the field and scored on Hoggarth’s second TD of the game from 1 yard out with 2:26 to play. Again it was Lucas Geiszler with another good kickoff return to the Carrington 45 yard line. Moving the ball to the Grover 40 yard line and facing a 2nd and ten, Schmitz connected with Shipman for the game winning score with 1:07 to play. Payton Smith sealed the victory for the Cards with an interception at the Cardinal 40 yard line with :32 to play.

Drew Page led Carrington with 109 rushing yards on 17 carries and 1 score. Kaden Wolsky added 53 yards on 13 carries and a score. The Cards outgained the Grovers 300-218 in total yards. Oak Grove finishes the season with a 6-3 overall record and Carrington improved to 8-1 and will travel to Hillsboro next Saturday against the number 1 ranked Burros of Hillsboro-CV.
