Dyrness, age 69, of Valley City, ND, died Thursday, October 26th peacefully with family by her side at Sanford Palliative Care after a courageous battle with stage 4 breast cancer. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 3rd at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church on Thursday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and one hour before the service on Friday morning. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the church. Interment will be in St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery.

Jean was the daughter of Francis and Adeline (Dusek) Arendt. She was raised on the family farm in Bremen, ND attending grade school in a two room school house. She graduated from St. James High School in New Rockford and St. Scholastic College in Minnesota. She taught elementary students for several years before marrying Ralph Dyrness in July of 1977. Jean’s legacy is reflected in the love and compassion she showed for students she taught and the children she raised. Over the years, she was a devoted stay-at-home mom. Jean was active in the parishes she lived in by teaching CCD, mentoring engaged couples as part of their marriage preparation, and volunteering in school settings, particularly in the libraries. She worked in the Valley City Public Schools as a substitute teacher and as a library aide in the junior-senior high resource room.

Jean is survived by her husband of 40 years, Ralph; children Mark (Shannon), Wahpeton, ND, Amy (Travis) Steele, New Rockford, ND, John, Valley City, ND, and Kayla (Keith) Jones, Fargo, ND; granddaughters, Liza, Leah, Lucy and baby Steele #4 due in April; one sister, Sister Andrea, PVBM, Fargo, ND; and one brother Larry (Nancy) Arendt, New Rockford, ND; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, and her children Marie and Gerard.
